Every organization needs to have a crisis communications plan to communicate how it will serve its customers in time of crisis. Crises come in all shapes and sizes and in many cases, you can’t possibly predict what the crisis will be or when it will come.
It’s therefore a best practice to have some kind of communication strategy in place should your organization find itself in a position where it cannot operate properly, for whatever reason. This might mean the facility itself is impaired, as is the case of a natural disaster, or there’s a reason for a lot of media attention that’s impacting operations.
A Crisis Communications Plan is not a plan to detail who calls whom or where employees should assemble. That is an organizational crisis plan. This plan details:
organizational key message points
location of off-site press conference
assembly locations for key personnel and spokespersons
hierarchy of spokespersons and list of contact numbers
instructions for staff and employees
crisis media training for key spokespersons
